Scotch for Scholarships
The "Scotch For Scholarships"
program was initiated by Dr. David McCoy, a professor and Director
of the Photography Department at Eastfield College of the Dallas
County Community College District. The purpose of the program
is to raise funds for interested and worthy students who are
interested in photography, but cannot afford the expensive materials
and equipment necessary to enroll in the course. The scholarship
pays tuition for a full semester of courses (to include at least
one photography course), necessary lab fees, photography textbook,
photographic film and paper for the semester and the use of
one of Dr. McCoy's professional 35mm cameras.
Scholarship criteria requires that the applicant must:
- Be a Dallas County resident who is
drug-free and meets Eastfield College admissions requirements
- Submit a written statement explaining:
Why he/she is interested in photography
Why he/she wants to learn photography
Why he/she should be a recipient of the scholarship
- Have a 2.5 high school grade point
average
- Submit a minimum of one letter each
from a teacher, counselor and other acquaintance who can
attest to the character, maturity, scholarship and other
deserving attributes of the applicant
- Demonstrate financial need as determined
by the Eastfield College Financial Aid Office
Photography is a most unusual course, requiring
a great deal of self-discipline, determination, patience, study,
work and tenacity to be successful. These are some of the same
ingredients required for success in life in general. "The
therapeutic value and work ethic that I have witnessed, on several
occasions over the years, that was naturally imbued, in otherwise
irresponsible and immature students, is amazing," states
Dr. McCoy. "It is often the student from a poor socio-economic
background that can benefit most from a photography course that
has a strong disciplinarian foundation. Too often, however,
these students can't afford to enroll in these courses. This
scholarship is designed to address this problem," Dr. McCoy
concludes.
Dr. McCoy, through The International
Order of Scotch Single Malt Whisky Connoisseurs, has conducted
several tastings during the past two years and has now endowed
one scholarship. His goal is to endow two more scholarships.
Depending on interest rates, it requires about five to seven
thousand dollars to endow a scholarship. Anyone interested in
contributing to this worthy fund may do so by making checks
payable to the "McCoy Photography Scholarship Fund"
and mailing it to:
Dallas County Community College District Scholarship Endowment
701 Elm Street
Dallas, Texas 75202
Please make a copy of your check and send it to Dr. McCoy so
that he can follow up to see that it is properly credited. Thank
you.
